About Us

Before the Internet, before I Can Haz Cheeseburger, before Keyboard Cat, Grumpy Cat, Maru, Lil Bub, Pusheen, and Jackson Galaxy – there was MadCat. We were cool with cats before cats were cool. Could you say that we started it all? Maybe.

Cats are often ignored and marginalized in the pet world. We set out to change that by curating a collection of only the coolest cat stuff – from fully-stuffed hardcore catnip toys to handmade driftwood cat trees that are pieces of art. We work with makers big and small to bring you not just a small section of stuff for cats but an entire store devoted to them. And we’re devoted to them as well.

We focus on providing the best food and advice on the planet so that Madison’s cats don’t have to travel far to get it good. While we’re not veterinarians, it’s always our pleasure to share our resources, experience and advice – free of charge. Oh, and a local secret – we have dog stuff too!

On our press-releases, we say fancy pants stuff like this:

“Voted Madison’s Favorite pet store for over a decade by Isthmus readers, MadCat is Madison’s most trusted source for food and advice regarding cat and dog nutrition and behavior. Founded in 2002, we own and operate three retail stores in Madison, Wisconsin.”

…but basically we just help people out with their pets.

We are not owned by a large corporation where quarterly-earnings get in the way of simple honesty. Our clients are our friends and neighbors – we know them and they know us. They expect us to tell the truth every time, even when it’s not easy to hear.

We recommend biologically appropriate diets – foods that have a strong correlation to the ancestral diet of the animal being fed. Cats are obligate carnivores – little lions and tigers. Dogs are just one genetic link away from a wolf. Their dietary needs are quite similar and they do not include corn gluten meal.

Our mission in life is to be relentless servants to our community and the cats and dogs they love. We’re here for you.

We support local No Kill rescues as well as Trap Neuter Release – we do not believe that euthanasia is a humane or effective way of controlling the pet population. We’ve proved that in our support of organizations like Don’t Shoot the Cat and the Madison Cat Project. We put our money where our mouth is by donating time, funds, supplies, and space toward making Madison a No Kill community; we foster cats at two locations and host a weekly adoption fair at our Mineral Point Road location.

Got a gross question about cat poop? We’re all ears. Cat stopped eating the food they’ve loved for years? Stop by, we have some ideas for ya. Fall in love with one of our beautiful cat trees but can’t fit it in your car? We’ll drop it off for you. Looking to give a cat a good home? We’ll hook you up.

We really love what we do and we strive to do it well. Visit us at the stores, hit us up on Facebook or email, or give us a call and we’ll get you what you need.
